Hands are easy to overlook when applying sunscreen. They are out in the open while we walk, travel and enjoy time outside, yet our sun-care routine often stops at the face. Caring for the backs of your hands is a useful addition to your daily beauty routine.
A manicure brings attention to your hands. Give the skin around those freshly finished nails some attention too, with practical sun protection and regular moisturising.
Make room for your hands in your sun-care routine.
The American Academy of Dermatology recommends a broad-spectrum, water-resistant sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher. Apply it to exposed skin before going outdoors, including the backs of your hands.
When outdoors, reapply about every two hours and after swimming or sweating. Follow the product directions, and remember that handwashing can remove protection.
Sunscreen works alongside shade and protective clothing. Keep a small tube in your bag so it is available when your plans take you outside.
Sun protection and your manicure
If you choose a gel manicure, ask about protecting the skin on your hands during curing. Dermatologists suggest broad-spectrum, water-resistant SPF 30 or higher, or dark, opaque gloves with the fingertips exposed. We can discuss this before your appointment so preparation is unhurried.
Classic polish or a natural finish may suit you if you prefer a treatment without gel curing.
After washing your hands, make time for moisturiser. Cuticle oil can be massaged around the nails as part of your evening routine. These products have different jobs: ordinary hand cream and cuticle oil do not replace sunscreen.
A simple habit to keep
Put sunscreen beside the items you take out each day. Small reminders make care easier to maintain, whether you are heading to work or spending an afternoon by the lake.
